Bald cypress is known for its soft, bright green, needle-like leaves that give the tree a delicate, airy appearance during the growing season. Unlike most conifers, it is deciduous, meaning it drops its foliage in late fall after turning a warm coppery orange. This seasonal color change adds visual interest and makes bald cypress stand out among Florida’s evergreens. In winter, its strong, upright trunk and finely textured branching structure provide sculptural beauty in the landscape.

In natural wetland settings, bald cypress often develops distinctive “knees,” woody projections that rise from the roots above the soil or water surface. While knees are more common in standing water, they may not form in typical residential landscapes with well-drained soil. This adaptability makes bald cypress suitable for both wet and moderately dry conditions, one of its greatest strengths as a landscape tree.

Taxodium distichum can grow 50–70 feet tall, and in ideal conditions even taller, with a broad, pyramidal shape that becomes more open and majestic with age. Despite its ultimate size, it grows at a moderate rate and establishes well when planted correctly. It is highly tolerant of Florida’s heat, humidity, storms, and even periodic flooding. At the same time, it can thrive in standard landscape soils once established, making it more versatile than many people realize.

Ecologically, bald cypress plays an important role in supporting wildlife. Its seeds are eaten by birds and small mammals, and its branches provide nesting and roosting habitat. In wetland environments, it contributes to water filtration and erosion control. Planting bald cypress helps preserve Florida’s native tree canopy and supports the broader ecosystem.

In residential landscapes, bald cypress works beautifully as a specimen tree, shade tree, or focal point near ponds and retention areas. Its tall, straight trunk and soft foliage create a calming, natural presence. Maintenance is minimal. Water regularly during establishment, especially in drier soils. Once established, bald cypress is remarkably hardy and requires little supplemental care. It is generally resistant to pests and diseases and does not require heavy fertilization.
